Brought up in a musical family, Stewart’s father George was piccolo in the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra for 35 years. Stewart started playing the piccolo at the age of 8 before playing flute.

Stewart studied at the Douglas Academy Music School outside Glasgow with John Wiggins, before further study in London at the Guildhall under Peter Lloyd and Edward Beckett.

While still studying he joined the BBC Philharmonic as Principal Piccolo from 1985-90. He went on to hold the same chair with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra from 1990-97 and the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 1997 to the present day. He has been Professor of Piccolo at the Royal College of Music since 2002.
