Dozens of new flutes were invented in the middle of the nineteenth century: some brilliant, some less so, and some that can only be described as truly bonkers. The reasons for rush of creativity are fascinating. Of the many inventions, the Boehm flute survived and has not changed much in 180 years. Other systems may be better, but most of us now play a Boehm flute, and there is little appetite for a change. The reasons for this are interesting, too
