Recognised as one of the world’s leading exponents of historical flutes, Rachel Brown is celebrated internationally as a soloist, orchestral musician, and teacher. Her acclaimed recital recordings of French Baroque music and Quantz Sonatas established her reputation early on, and her disc featuring virtuosic works by Schubert and Boehm was hailed as “a revelation” (Pan). Her dedication to the Berlin School has revived interest in the neglected works of Quantz, while her recording of C.P.E. Bach’s D minor concerto was voted best by Polish radio. Highlights also include Bach’s B minor Suite, Handel’s chamber music (“perfection itself”), and forthcoming Vivaldi concertos and arias.
Rachel’s orchestral career spans decades, performing on both silver and historical flutes. Described as “a ray of sunshine over the orchestra” (New York Times), she has held principal roles with the Academy of Ancient Music, the Hanover Band, Collegium Musicum 90, and others, performing and recording across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Australia.
As a founding member of the London Handel Players, she has delved deeply into Handel’s chamber repertoire. At the Göttingen Handel Festival, her “pure, silky smooth and wonderfully expressive flute sound” inspired comparisons to Orpheus (Göttinger Tageblatt).
A passionate educator, Rachel is Professor of Historical Flute at the Royal College of Music and Trinity Laban, and has given masterclasses worldwide. She is author of The Early Flute (CUP), and is currently preparing a baroque flute practice manual and a book on baroque dance for musicians.
