Michael Cox is one of Britain’s most distinguished flautists, celebrated for the breadth of his artistry and musical collaborations. He is principal flute of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and the London Sinfonietta, and is professor of flute at the Royal Academy of Music, where he has mentored many of today’s leading players.

Previously principal flute with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, London Mozart Players and Britten Sinfonia, Michael enjoys the variety of performing with symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles and contemporary groups. His solo career has taken him to every continent, including multiple appearances at the BBC Proms and performances in major London venues.

A champion of new music, Michael has collaborated with composers including Sir Michael Tippett, Harrison Birtwistle, Oliver Knussen, Thomas Adès, Mark-Anthony Turnage and John Tavener, as well as international figures such as Messiaen, Takemitsu and Reich. Recent solo highlights include the posthumous world premiere of a Tavener work at the Royal Albert Hall, a concerto by Lotta Wennakoski, and a piccolo concerto written for him by Simon Holt.

Michael’s students have gone on to hold key positions in orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra, English National Opera and Royal Northern Sinfonia. His recordings on Naxos, Sony, Hyperion and Nimbus are widely praised.

Michael is an Altus Artist, playing an Altus ALII Flute.

Michael’s appearance at the Just Flutes Festival 2025 is generously supported by Altus Flutes.
